On June 5, youth were invited to come out to the Mac’s Convenience Store in Activa Ave right here in Williamsburg, to spray paint an outdoor wall and create street art with professional street artist, Magic “Finnga” Wong. Since June 6, Wong his been working his magic creating a unique mural that reflects Waterloo Region. The big reveal will be tomorrow, June 8, during the kick-off to the annual Waterloo Regional Crime Stoppers Conference.
Good bye old, plain wall!
The very talented Magic “Finnga” Wong is ready to go with many, many cans of spray paint!
The Waterloo Region Police partnered with Magic “Finnga” Wong after receiving funding through an educational study grant from Harvard University. To learn more about the StreetART Program, visit the Circle K Crimebusters website or YouTube channel.
The goal of the mural is to work alongside youth in the community to build positive relationships while helping prevent crime.
Day 1: Was packed with youth from Williamsburg who were excited to show off their artistic skills.
Day 2: Progress is happening on day 2! We can’t wait to see the final tomorrow!
Magic has completed many community murals in other cities such and worked with various law enforcement organizations such as the Toronto Police Service, York Regional Police Service, Peel Regional Police Service, Thunder Bay Police Service, Barrie Police Service and Ottawa Police Service. Each of these communities have reported a noticeable reduction in crime at their mural locations.
We are very fortunate as a community to have this project right here in Williamsburg. Over the years, our community has expanded, grown in numbers and become strong. This project is a direct reflection of that. The mural is one of the many unique features our neighbourhood has to offer.
We are always looking to evolve our community and were recently given a grant from the City of Kitchener to improve Max Becker Common. Plans are underway to improve the park, however we want your opinion! What would you like to see in the park? Do you dream of sitting under a tree and relaxing while reading a book? Would you like to play chess with a neighbor?
